ACTION ALERT: Protect Hawai’i's Reef And Fish!
Bad news. The Senate decided to remove a part of Senate Bill 1240 that would put a halt on aquarium fish collection in Hawai’i. Fortunately, our partners are now pursuing a halt on any new collection permits! Currently, it only costs $50 for anyone to obtain a permit to collect fish for the aquarium trade. Once they have that permit, they can pretty much take as many fish off the reef as they please. Due to the high mortality rate these fish endure once captured, collectors often take very high numbers of fish, knowing only a portion will survive long enough to sell.
This small group of collectors threaten Hawai’i’s reef for personal financial gain and they aren't afraid to play dirty. In the most recent hearing, aquarium collectors told Senators and bill supporters they'll refuse to look for alternative jobs if the bill is passed in order to make them pay their unemployment checks. One even brought their child to testify misinformation. We have to all come together and be LOUD.
Please take a few minutes to speak up! You can submit written testimony from anywhere in the world. If you're in Hawai’i, come join us at the Capitol building tomorrow at 10AM to voice your support in person!
