ACTION ALERT: Oppose The Aquarium Collection Industry’s Efforts To Reopen The Trade
Last year animal activists got closer than ever before to banning the aquarium trade in Hawaii, getting a bill through all committees and to the governor's desk only to have him veto it.
Fortunately, in September, the Supreme Court overruled and imposed a ban on aquarium fish collection until a comprehensive environmental assessment could evaluate the impacts of the practice on Hawaii's reefs
The Supreme Court also heavily criticized the Department Of Land And Natural Resources (DLNR) for allowing commercial aquarium collection to get so out of control and their habit of lobbying against legislative efforts aimed at regulating collection.
Now, members of the aquarium trade industry have proposed two environmental assessments to DLNR, in hopes of getting them approved and re-opening this trade. Both proposed assessments wrongly insist there is no impact on the reef and therefore there should be no regulation on the amount of permits given out, species of fish collected, or amount allowed to be taken.
We have until May 5th, 2018 to help our friends at For The Fishes convince DLNR to deny these proposed environmental assessments and YOU CAN HELP. Leave a public comment for DLNR before their hearing. You don't have to live in Hawaii to do so! Speak up for those without a voice! Mahalo!
